Sci-Tech China Set Up Key Lab on Ocean Study

Oceanographers and scientists will be able to use state-of-the-art technology for their research at the newly-founded laboratory of Ocean Dynamic Processes and Satellite Oceanography in Hangzhou.

The lab, located in east China's Zhejiang province, is open to both Chinese and overseas scientists, according to an official with the facility.

Laboratory Director Su Jilan, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and five other CAS academicians are on the lab's science committee.

Sun Zhihui, deputy director of the State Oceanic Administration, said that the new lab will help further a variety of scientific subjects, make proper use of oceanic resources, and help China to catch up with the latest global developments in oceanography.

Research funding of more than 200,000 yuan (about 24,000 US dollars) and housing will be available for researchers coming from research units other than the lab.
