Monday, November 08, 1999, updated at 17:04(GMT+8) China Chinese Legislator Stresses Enforcement of Laws for Environmental Protection Zou Jiahua, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), urged the people's congresses and their standing committees at all levels to increase supervision over the enforcement of laws for the protection of the environment and resources in Guiyang Guizhou Province. Speaking at a NPC forum on the protection of the environment and resources in central and western regions, which ended here today, Zou said that the key to accurate law enforcement lies in strengthening the supervisory system. According to Zou, China has enacted six environment laws and 13 resources laws over the past two decades, basically forming a legal framework in these two areas suited to the country's political, economic and social development. Zou said that efforts should be made in particular to enhance the supervision of law enforcement personnel and establish and improve supervisory bodies. He asked the people's congresses and their standing committees to publicly promote these laws and increase the public awareness of environmental protection. Zou stressed the importance of environmental protection in the country's central and western regions, which are facing severe ecological problems, saying this is essential for the sustainable development of the national economy.
