Sports China Dominates World Wushu Championships

China dominated the 1999 World Wushu Championships as they continued their winning streak to clinch three more golds on Saturday.

Chen Lun beat Chun Wei of Chinese Taipei to win the men's Nanquan (art of boxing) with 9.55 points, while Kong Xiangdong taking the Taijiquan (shadow boxing) crown and Liu Xiaolei the women's Daoshu (art of knife).

Kong edged out Yang Seong Chan of South Korea by a slim advantage of 0.16 points, while Liu's 9.60 mark was the highest score of the tournament.

China, which bored Wushu or Chinese Martial Arts, had collected seven golds so far in the tournament, which will be closed on Sunday.

Hong Kong of China tallied to five titles with two more wins on Saturday when Cheung Man Keung and Li Fai triumphing in the men's Jianshu (art of sword) and women's Taijijian (shadow-sword) respectively.

Lei Fei's victory in the women's Qiangshu (art of spear) put the name of Macao on the list of the gold winners.

A total of 362 athletes from 55 countries and regions are competing for 31 golds featured in the four-day event.

Wushu, an ancient Chinese defense art also known as Kungfu, is now an increasingly popular sport in the world, with 60 million people in China and over 10 million fans outside China practicing it. (Xinhua)
