Editorial An Embodiment of Aspiration for Peace

A signed article in the People's Daily calls on the Palestinians and Israel to meet their peace commitments, gear up mutual trust and materialize ethnic good-neighborly co-existence. Thus, the article says, can genuine peace be brought to the Mideast.

It describes the Israel-Palestine-US Oslo Summit as having positive intention to give a push to the Mideast peace process. After noting that the US has a strong desire to push ahead with the Mideast peace process, the article points out that since Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak took office this summer, there has been positive advancement on the Israel-Palestine issue, a passage was opened between Gaza and the Jordan River west bank and some detained Palestinians were set free. This, it says, has brought about a new turn to the stalemated Mideast peace process. And both Israel and the Palestinian side all demanded a positive part to be played by the US. For the US, the article says, President Bill Clinton hoped for a breakthrough in the Mideast issue to further establish the absolute US predominant stance in the Mideast, ease off the anti-US sentiment in the Arab world and serve the immediate interest of the US for the Mideast is a vital link in the US global strategy.

However, it argues, there is a long history of piled-up ethnic grievances in the Mideast and the issues over there are complicated. So the issues cannot be solved simply by President Clinton's enthusiasm and pressure, it predicts. What is gratifying is that Israel and the Palestinians had shown strong aspiration for peace. It hopes that both sides meet their commitments to bring peace to the Mideast.
