November 11 is the 50th birthday of the People's Air Force. After nearly 50 years of construction, the Guangzhou Military Command Air Force, which takes on the heavy task of defending the security of the South China's territorial airspace, has developed into a crack force composed of fighter, bomber and freighter air arms, ground-to-air missile, anti-aircraft artillery and radar-man arms and other technical arms with modern combat capabilities, it has enjoyed a high prestige over the blue sky with its new type of aircraft and new equipment.

In the various army units of the Guangzhou Military Command Air Force scattered over five provinces of south China, this correspondent saw the following:

--The fighter air arm new airplane modifying units have all built up combat effectiveness, the transport air arm units can perform their fighting tasks in any airspace of the country, bomber air arm units have twice participated in the joint operational manoeuvres of various services, achieving general excellence;

--Operational aircraft can operate in a super long-range, high speed, all airspace, great in-depth and super visual range. The airborne weapon system has the long firing range, high precision, multi-functional and all-directional attacking capabilities;

--The missile troops can readily go into emergency action as organically assigned, all-personnel, fully-equipped real soldiers without going through training just before going into battle and without supplementing personnel and equipment. With the operational performances of high precision of hits, quick operational reaction, large firing range and multi-attacking targets;

--A large batch of talent group with a high formal schooling and high qualities has been formed; a large number of pick airmen, crack gunners and bombing crackajacks have come to the fore;

--Army, division and regiment officers all can fly and can command; flying division commander can lead his unit in an air operation, while regiment commander can all engage in "all-weather" operation;

Several generals told this correspondent: In he 1960s when the Guangzhou Military Command air arm units had a trial of strength with the Kuomintang air force, they created the 3:0 military exploits, their heroic spirit has inspired cross-Straits awe. Today, the Guangzhou Military Command fighter air arm which undertakes the heavy task of remodeling various new-type fighters for our army has successively succeeded in organizing the drills of various tactic subjects, including super visual-range air battle, electronic fighting, marine combat firing, and deep-sea combat patrol, giving prominence to the application of airborne equipment and fire-control system under the environment of similar actual battle. All pilots have reached the level of "all-weather" and four-plane formation lead aircraft. The bombing air arm troops organized the training of highly difficult subjects, such as night low altitude bombing, long-range raid and heavy weight take-off. The transport air arm which undertakes the task of modifying new-type transport airplanes for our army, in an effort to build up the capability for night operation as well as long-distance air transport and long-range operation, currently organizes for the first time an ultra-strength flying by heavy transport planes under complicated weather conditions after midnight. The missile troops which undertake the task of remodeling Chinese-made new-type missiles have built up their systematic combat effectiveness in less than one year, operating flexibly over the vast northwest desert, creating a precedent of using home-made new-type ground-to-air missiles to shoot down the rapid small target planes. The antiaircraft and radar troops, centered around the battle to attack hidden targets, cruise missiles and armed helicopters and prevent electronic interference, precision attack and reconnaissance and surveillance, strive to explore the ability to win victory over the enemy and form overall operational might together with the missile troops.

The overall combat effectiveness of the Guangzhou Military Command Air Force which enjoys high fame over the south China airspace has stepped on to a new stage.
