Sports Belu: Romanian Success is not Miracle

Romanian women team is great, but it is not a miracle, the country's head coach Octavian Belu said on Saturday.

As what is expected, Romanian women team impressed the gymnasium with their elegant and clean routines and led the qualifier after Saturday afternoon's competitions at the world gymnastics championships opened Friday night.

Belu, Romanian gymnastics legend, lavished his praise on his team's charge, but he argued that Romanian consistent dominance on the international arena is not a miracle. That resulted from a hard work and the country's training system.

"It is a hard work. We work several hours a day, and we work every day whether Saturday or Sunday," said Belu, the women's team head coach who produced such greats like Lavinia Milosovici and Gina Gogean.

"We have camps so that the girls work together and live together. We have full-time teachers and special programs, so that the girls need not go to the normal school.

"We have medical staff, and we have government support, all this led to our success." said Belu

"We also have non-stop selection, we select the best for each age group, from six-year-olds to those who can compete for the world championships and Olympics. That is one reason we can be successful," Belu continued.

His idea was also echoed by Bitang Maria of Romanian women's team coach. "We are working hard and we have good children. It is not a miracle," said Maria following team's wonderful competition.

Asked if Romania could ride on such good shape to defend the gold medal, both coaches became circumspect.

"You know, Russian team is very good, and though China seems not to be good in training sessions it can become better in the competition. It's hard to say," Maria said.

Belu also thought this is just the beginning of a "big fight", and it is no time to make any speculation.

"Some teams are very strong like Russia and China. We do what we are able to do, we managed such nice things as the scoring in the uneven bars and the judging is right," Belu said.

"But we will try to do our best in team final, because we need to do that. The difference is so sensible and they (Russia and China) are so strong. We must think about what we have to do, to be perfect and clean," said Belu. (Xinhua)
