US Secretary of State John Kerry kicked off his two-day visit to China on Friday. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of China-US diplomatic relations. There is currently new vitality in the relationship, and there are greater opportunities for further enhancement.
Since last year, bilateral ties have been progressing steadily. In June 2013 China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama agreed to establish a new type of major country relationship during their meeting in Sunnylands, California, featuring no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win principles. It has set the tone for future China-U.S. ties.
Condoleezza Rice, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, has said that the intention with regard to China is to seek to implement a new type of major power relationship. This means managing the inevitable competition between both sides, while strengthening cooperation for mutual benefit.
Bilateral economic and trade relations are also making steady headway. In 2013, China-US trade volume exceeded 500 billion U.S. dollars. According to the latest research report by China-US Exchange Foundation, China and the United States will probably become each other's largest trading partners in 2022 and expanding bilateral investment will become a new area of growth.
In the military arena, exchanges are gradually being restored. Both sides need to work to build a new military relationship adapted to the new type of major country relationship. Since last year, bilateral military exchanges have increased significantly. However, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, its close surveillance over China, and discriminatory laws concerning China have severely restricted the sustainable development of military relations.
There are still some obstacles that need to be overcome for further development of bilateral ties, which are directly related to future peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world. China and the U.S. should continue to strengthen cooperation on regional and global hot issues, maintaining close communication on the DPRK nuclear issue, the Iranian nuclear issue, and the Syria crisis, and strengthening dialogue on climate change and cyber security.
In accordance with trends of globalization, China and the U.S. should dismantle all obstacles and build the new relationship based on joint responsibility. Both sides should direct their efforts towards creating a new global order with win-win cooperation.
