Over 1 million Chinese people die of smoking-related diseases every year, and 100,000 people die of diseases caused by passive smoking, the National Health and Family Planning Committee revealed on Tuesday.
China is the world's largest producer and consumer of tobacco, with a smoking population of more than 300 million. Around 740 million people suffer from passive smoking, said Yao Hongwen, spokesperson of the committee.
The committee said that regulations to ban smoking in indoor public areas have been listed in the country's legislation plan.
