BEIJING, Nov. 11 -- Radioactive substances are at a normal level in west Pacific waters, China's State Oceanic Administration said on Monday.
The administration found no Cesium-134 in waters near the country's southeastern Fujian and Taiwan. Cesium-137 was at a normal level in the same waters.
The administration said it launched the monitoring work on Oct. 20 because Japan keeps discharging large quantities of radioactive contaminated water into the sea after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. This is seriously impacting the maritime eco-system.
As of Nov. 8, the administration completed 20 days of monitoring in waters near Fujian and the south of Taiwan, collecting over 1,150 samples including air, water, marine creatures and ocean sediments.
The monitoring team is heading to the seas to the southeast of Fukushima.
