A postgraduate student in Shanghai has been charged with intentional homicide after he allegedly killed his roommate by poisoning him earlier this year.
The case was accepted by Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court on Wednesday.
An initial police investigation showed that the suspect, Lin Senhao, who attended medical school at Fudan University, held a grudge against his roommate surnamed Huang over a trivial matter and planned to poison him.
Lin took a deadly chemical compound from a university lab and used it to contaminate a water dispenser in their dormitory at noon on March 31, according to the investigation.
Huang, a third-year medical postgraduate student at Fudan University, showed poisoning symptoms after drinking water from the dispenser on April 1 and was pronounced dead due to multiple organ failure on April 16.
The Shanghai police received reports about the case from the university on April 11 and started investigating immediately.
On April 12, Lin was detained by police, who asked Huangpu District People's Procuratorate to approve his arrest on April 19.
