Five people were killed and another five have been rescued after two boats became caught in the sluice gate of a bridge in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.
Two boats were caught in the sluice gate of a bridge on the Nanpanjiang River in Goujie Township, Yiliang County at 12:40 p.m. on Monday after the two boats caught on fire, the information office of Yiliang County said.
Ten people were on the boats cleaning the river when the accident occurred. One person escaped by grabbing a reinforced bar on the bridge, and four others were pulled from the water by rescuers.
Another five people, who also fell into the river, have been confirmed dead, the office said.
