South China will continue to broil in an ongoing heatwave and rainstorms are expected to sweep the northeast over the next three days, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said when issuing an orange alert for high temperatures and a blue alert for rainfall on Monday.

The NMC issued a forecast indicating hot weather for areas south of the Yangtze River, regions along the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers and Chongqing Municipality, with temperatures expected to climb above 35 degrees Celsius on Monday.

The highest temperatures will reach 40 to 42 degrees Celsius in parts of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, according to the observatory.

Meanwhile, rainstorms will strike northeast China, as well as parts of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces from Monday to Wednesday, according to the NMC.

Torrential rain bringing precipitation of 100 to 120 mm will hit the central part of Heilongjiang Province and the southern part of Liaoning Province from Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon. These regions will experience thunderstorms, strong winds and hail, the observatory added.

China uses a four-tiered color-coded warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
