A total of 1,426 people died of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland in July, with AIDS killing the most, according to figures released by health authorities on Friday.
AIDS resulted in 991 deaths last month, according to a statement posted on the website of the National Health and Family Planning Commission.
Tuberculosis was the second-biggest killer, claiming 189 lives.
In July, the mainland reported a single H7N9 avian flu case in which a patient from north China's Hebei Province was diagnosed in Beijing, bringing the total number of infections on the mainland to 133. Of the cases, 44 have ended in death, the statement said.
A total of 755,623 infectious disease cases were reported on the Chinese mainland last month, according to the statement.
Among them, 11 cases of cholera were reported, with one resulting in death.
Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A infectious diseases, or the most serious infectious diseases.
About 336,960 cases were identified as Class B infectious diseases. Hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, dysentery and gonorrhea accounted for 94 percent of the cases in this category, the statement said.
The statement said category C infectious diseases claimed 42 lives in July, with foot-and-mouth disease, infectious diarrhea and mumps reported the most frequently.
