Food poisoning deaths drop in second quarter

China recorded 22.6 percent fewer deaths caused by food poisoning in the second quarter year on year, said the National Health and Family Planning Commission here Wednesday.

A total of 24 Chinese people died of food poisoning from April to June in 38 reported cases, in which about 1,457 people suffered, said a commission statement. In the same period last year there were 31 deaths.

The number of reported cases went down by 25.5 percent from the same period last year while the number of people affected was down 34.6 percent, the statement said.

Toxic animal and plant products as well as poisonous mushrooms caused 70.8 percent of the deaths. But 68.5 percent of people suffered bacteria-triggered food poisoning.

About 52.6 percent of cases happened at home, in which 91.7 percent of the deaths occurred.

Among these cases, seven involved students and six of them happened at school canteens. The figure was eight fewer than the same period last year and the number of students to suffer dropped by 71.5 percent.
