SHANGHAI, April 17 (Xinhua) -- A new case of H7N9 bird flu was confirmed Wednesday in Shanghai, bringing the city's total number of infections to 31, local health authorities said.
The patient, an 89-year-old man surnamed Chen, tested positive for H7N9 Tuesday night at the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a statement from the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission.
Chen, a native of east China's Jiangsu Province, was hospitalized at the Pudong New Area People's Hospital on Tuesday. He is in stable condition, the statement said.
Nine people who had close contact with the patient have been under medical observation and have exhibited no abnormal symptoms so far, it said.
