BEIJING, October 9 (ChinaMil) -- Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera recently required Japanese Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces to quicken the pace of boldly amending the Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as "the Guidelines"). Some media reported that the issue of the Diaoyu Islands may be possibly incorporated into the Guidelines. Senior Colonel Du Wenlong, a senior researcher with the Academy of Military Science of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China, expressed in an interview that China should normally safeguard rights and interests and keep military pressure in this direction.

Speaking of Japan's intention behind the so-called "capability of attacking enemy bases", Du Wenlong expressed that that is a pre-emptive strike, namely, if it is threatened by an enemy base, Japan can launch a devastating attack against the base before being attacked by the enemy, and backed up by the U.S., Japan is not alone in this attacking operation.

Supposing that Japan's "capability of attacking enemy bases" is aimed at the direction of the Diaoyu Islands, it will surely involve various joint operation plans and military cooperation between the U.S. and Japan. In addition, joint development of weaponry and equipment by the U.S. and Japan is also an important factor, which might help Japan to be more powerful and even more dangerous.

Will the issue of the Diaoyu Islands be included in the Guidelines in the amendment? Speaking of this, Du Wenlong expressed that the hotspot issue will surely be integrated into the Guidelines. Japan's so-called "bold amendment of the Guidelines" must be reflected in the affairs of Japan's greatest concern. The articles on the Diaoyu Islands are Japan's focus, and also the important contents to be amended.

With regards to how China shall respond if the issue of the Diaoyu Islands is incorporated into the Guidelines, Du Wenlong expressed that China must be well prepared to improve weaponry and equipment and promote systematic combat capability, so as to normally safeguard its rights and interests and keep its military pressure in this direction.
