BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's weaponry research and development is solely for national security and not aimed at any specific country or goal, a military spokesman said Thursday.

Geng Yansheng, a Ministry of National Defense spokesman, made the remarks at a press briefing in response to questions concerning a new frigate delivered to the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy).

"The delivery of the new frigate to the PLA Navy is in accordance with the normal arrangement based on weaponry construction and development progress," Geng said.

China's first Type 056 stealth frigate was delivered to the PLA Navy in Shanghai on Monday. The frigate, featuring good stealth performance and electromagnetic compatibility, is expected to be deployed primarily for escort missions and anti-submarine operations, according to reports.
