According to The Comprehensive Urban Design for Dongjin New District envisioned by Liu Thai Ker, Singapore urban planning master, Dongjin New District will cover an area of 218 square kilometers as planned, among which, 34.6 square kilometers will be built as start area, and 5 square kilometers as core area.
Wang Shirong, Party Working Secretary of Xindong New District, commented that only supplemented with the newly-built Dongjin New District, could Xiangyang City, which currently resembles C letter in urban structure, be a full circle at last. More significantly, judging from the angle of economic flow, Xiangyang must move eastwards as the economic flow towards Wuhan and Shanghai directions accounting for 41% of total economic flow of the city, that towards Beijing and Taiyuan directions accounting for 16%, Xi'an and Chengdu directions 20%; and Kunming and Guangzhou directions 23%.
Together with Zhou Ronghua's three-layer house which is located within the core area of Dongjin New District by chance, a total of 1,266 farm households have been torn down. In addition to RMB0.34 million of house subsidy, the government also compensated Zhou with allowance for relocation, work absence, and house rent, enabling Zhou's family temporarily settled in urban lease house.
Jin Baofan, Director of Dongjin New District Management Committee, discloses that the construction engineering for first phase of new apartment building project (in total of 1 million square meters could be provided to local relocated residents) have been progressing to the fifth floor, while the second phase of the project, which is designed to provide a total of 2 million square meters of living space to the same group of people, is ready to kick off its construction. Zhou is expected to be assigned with two apartments totaling 200 square meters (one for self-residency and another for lease purpose) at the end of this year. At present, construction for a road network containing three vertical and five horizontal roads has been initiated and will be wrapped up in September of this year. Upon completion, it will function as major backbone road network for the booming new district. Up till now, there are 120 construction projects kicked off or concluded for contracts in Dongjin New District, with a total investment value of RMB170 billion.
Meanwhile, the biggest engineering project even seen in the history of Xiangyang has been launched, so as to renovate urban villages and shantytowns in urban areas and move enterprises and wholesale markets outside urban areas. Xi Jianfeng, an official of the so-called "Two Renovation and Two Relocation" Project, introduces that the renovation project for 29 urban villages and shantytowns has been initiated comprehensively, which will help relocate 50,000 households from their old home of about 10 million square meters to new houses to be built of 30 million square meters; the relocation of 268 enterprises and 12,000 business owners in 66 professional markets to logistics park has been speeded up and will generate 210,000 employment positions. In total, 300,000 of local residents can benefit from widened career channels as offered by the grand project to further improve their living quality.
