The northeastern Chinese city Dalian is holding a beach festival, which features a lively sand sculpture competition.

In Dalian, it’s time to get dirty, in the sand that is. This sand sculpture competition is a highlight of the city’s beach festival, and is very popular among residents and tourists. This year, 300 people are taking part in the event, which requires them to finish a sculpture that is at least 1.5 meters high. For Jia Lianwu and his assistants, it’s no problem. They finished this totem in less than 4 hours.

Jia Lianwu, sand sculpture contestant, said, "This is my fifth time to come to this competition. It’s a good place to make friends and create your own work. I’m very happy to be here."

But for some, finishing a large sand sculpture seems to be mission impossible. This is the first time for Cui to be in the competition. She was planning to make a sand cake with her son, but as the clock counts down, she has little hope of finishing it.

Summer’s winding down, so head on over to Dalian’s beach festival, which continues until Saturday.
