Traditionally, a man of letters has brushes, paper, ink sticks and ink slabs in his study. These "four treasures of the study" are essential for the development of the calligraphic art.

Soaked in ink, brush has what is known as "capillarity", which combined with the strong ink permeability of a special Chinese paper, making the strokes in a calligraphic work more vivid, varied and pretty.
