FC Barcelona plan to have a new football ground with the capacity to hold 105,000 who will be able to enjoy their matches under the comfort of a closable roof.

The news was announced by club spokesman Toni Freixa, who did not say whether the stadium would be constructed on the current site of the Camp Nou or on ground that the club owns closer to the center of the city, however, Freixa did say the ground would not be just a renovation of the current iconic ground.

"For the first time, the club has the results of its research. The first conclusion is that no decision has yet been made. This is a complex subject made up of many elements, a decision that is vitally important, because it affects the club's future stadium for the next 50 years. We will make a decision in January," he confirmed in a press conference held on Tuesday.

Freixa discussed the choices the club had, saying there were two options: "Construct a new stadium in Diagonal (the main thoroughfare that runs from the north to the south of the city) or completely remodel the current ground, which would be the equivalent of building a new stadium."

He said a decision on which of the options the club would take, had still to be made, but insisted the plans were pretty much similar.

"The new stadium will have a capacity of 105,000 and will be covered," he said, adding the fans would be consulted over the plans, although the study made it clear, "We need to have a new stadium, whether that's on the current site or on a different one."

While he refused to discuss the costs of the project, Freixa insisted the club would: "never consider a project which put the financial stability at risk."

"Both options are viable on a technical, financial and urban level," he said, before giving a major hint that the likely option would be a new city center site given that: "the first team will play all their home games at the current stadium. It won't affect the players or the members."

The news could therefore mean the end of the iconic Camp Nou Stadium, which was opened in 1957 and seen many of the club's most historic moments.
