Left winger Yu Hai scored three times in the two-leg Chinese FA Cup final to help Guizhou Renhe, the fourth finisher of the Chinese Super League, upset invincible-looking Guangzhou Evergrande 3-2 on aggregate to take the club's first-ever trophy here on Saturday.
Evergrande, boasting the glories of triple top flight winners, the defending champions of the FA Cup, and even the AFC Champions League titlists, rallied to beat Renhe 2-1 at home today, but their first leg 2-0 loss made them concede the title.
The Cup win also gifted Renhe a concrete berth in next year's AFC Champions League.
Yu Hai, 26, scored twice in the first leg and lifted Renhe to 1-0 lead in Saturday's second leg with a header in the box. His sharp breakthroughs in the two legs were impressive.
Yu Hai had ever joined Dutch first division league side Vitesse in 2007 and scored Chinese footballers' first goal in the Netherlands in a Dutch Cup game. He returned to China after the 2008 Olympics, due to cruciate ligament damage in his left knee. Now, Yu still has little chance to be a starter in the national team.
Renhe head coach Gong Lei had sung highly of Yu Hai after the final first leg, saying "Yu boasts highest quality in speed, skill and chance-taking among Chinese footballers. He proved his ability in the match in which most of the opponents' defenders are national team starters."
Missing two Brazilian key strikers Muriqi and Elkeson for red and yellow cards before, Evergrande's Italian famous coach Marcello Lippi had to make great changes in the formation, fielding young player Yang Chaosheng and Rong Hao who had just recovered from injury.
Lagging 1-0 behind forced Lippi to send in substitute Feng Junyan in the second half to replace Yang Chaosheng. The change worked. In the 59th minute, Feng caught up with an opponents' mistaken cross to level the score 1-1.
Two minutes later, Renhe gaolie Zhang Lie rejected Evergrande playmaker Zheng Zhi's shot, but Argentine striker Conca sent the rebound back to the bottom of the net.
Rallying to the 2-1 lead, Evergrande played more aggressively and laid siege to Renhe's box. But the scoreboard did not change again.
Renhe and Evergrande had met in the 2012 Chinese FA Cup final, in which Renhe earned a home tie 1-1 but lost 4-2 on road.
Evergrande will fly to Morocco to attend the World Club Champions League in mid-December.
At last week's AFC annual awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Evergrande became the biggest winners with the most prestigious Player of the Year to Zheng Zhi, Foreign Player of the Year to Muriqi, and the best Asian club of the Year.
