Australian lady Gai Waterhouse trained race horse Fiorente on Tuesday claimed victory in the 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup, leaving hundreds of thousands fans cheering around the Flemington racecourse.

The horse ranked second in last year's race ridden by Damien Oliver, won from Red Cadeaux in second and Mount Athos in third. 24 horses took part in this year's fierce competition, with nine of them being trained overseas.

At least 100,000 fans flocked into the Flemington racecourse Tuesday and 700 million people in around 120 countries are estimated to enjoy the race by watching and listening through broadcasting.

Besides the local fans, many of the visitors are from overseas, including China.

"This is my first Melbourne Cup experience, which is wonderful. We don't know much about the race, but the festival is also a fashion show," Zhong Wen, a 24-year female clerk from Beijing said, with her head beautifully decorated with a flower.

As a tradition of the Melbourne Cup, fully and colorful dressed ladies with gorgeous ornaments on their heads are usually the most shining part of the carnival without any doubt.

Melbourne Cup Day is Australia's best-known horse-racing event and is held on the first Tuesday of November every year.

The massive national event is popularly dubbed as "the race that stops a nation". It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria and sees millions gamble on the winner and join workmates and friends at the boisterous pubs that broadcast the race.
