Dutch cyclist Thomas Dekker suffered a broken leg during the Tour of Alberta, an MRI scan revealed on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Garmin-Sharp cyclist broke his right leg after crashing in the Tour of Alberta prologue on September 3, over two weeks ago.

Despite the pain Dekker continued to ride the Tour of Alberta and he also started in the GP Quebec last Friday. That Canadian race ended for him due to a crash after 30 kilometers. He fell on his left knee this time and could not continue.

"I flew home to get medical examination," Dekker said on his personal website. "During the examination the fracture was revealed, just below my right knee. I have to stay calm for six weeks, so my season is automatically over. I am obviously very disappointed."

After six weeks of rest, Dekker will start training again for next season. His contract at Garmin-Sharp runs out at the end of 2014.
