Chinese firm lauds Zambia's investment climate

A Chinese firm that has been operating in Zambia for the last 15 years on Tuesday lauded the investment climate in the southern African nation, saying the government has been supportive to foreign investment.

CAMCO Machinery & Equipment Zambia Limited, which has been supplying agricultural equipment, food processing equipment, construction equipment and livestock equipment since 1998, said it has been able to remain and conduct business in the southern African nation because of the good investment climate.

"The investment climate in Zambia is good and the government as well as government institutions have been very supportive," Li Tie, the company's managing director said in an interview.

The Chinese investor said the cordial relations between Zambia and China has helped in cementing business links between investors from the two countries, adding that his company has since embarked on an ambitious expansion drive in the country.

The company plans to open branches in all the country's 10 provinces as part of its expansion program as well as start manufacturing construction equipment locally.

According to him, Zambia still has vast arable land and a small population hence offering great business opportunities for not only his company but other foreign companies.

The company, which is a member of CAMCO Group of Companies based in Shanghai, has so far employed 70 Zambian workers, and the official said Zambians should discard the myth that all Chinese firms were not adhering to local labor laws.

"I have been in Zambia for a long time and we are working very well with the Zambian workers. People should stop labeling all Chinese as bad just because one Chinese company is involved in abrogating labor laws," he said.

The company distributes more than 100 various equipments and also provides after-sale back up services.
