YANGON, April 17 -- A total of six people were killed and 47 others injured over the four-day period of Myanmar's Thingyan water festival in Yangon region, local media reported Thursday.

The 20 accidental cases mostly happened with water throwing motor vehicles which ran at overspeed and overturned.

Besides these accidents, there were also cases related to pickpocketing, looting and stealing, media reports quoted police case records as saying.

In last year's water festival, four people were killed and 92 others injured in 46 car accident cases across the country.

This year's Thingyan water festival lasted from April 13 to 16.

To ensure the safety of all revelers during the water festival, more than 5,000 police and security personnel were deployed at water throwing pavilions in Yangon, the former capital, with the help of CCTV cameras.

Two major water throwing pandals of Yangon Region and Yangon Mayor highlighted this year's traditional water festival, which is the biggest and most merry one out of Myanmar's 12 seasonal festivals throughout the year.
