5.8-magnitude quake hits off Mexican coast

MEXICO CITY, March 9 -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit just off the coast of southwestern Mexico at 6:37 p.m. local time (0037 GMT) Sunday, Mexico' s National Seismological Service reported.

The Service said the epicenter of the quake was located 82 km from the southwestern city of Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca state.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has earlier put the the magnitude at 6.3 and later revised down to 5.8.

The mayor of Mexico City, Miguel Angel Mancera, said at his twitter account that the quake was little felt in the capital city. Mexico City' s Civil Protection Department also said that there were no casualties or property damage were recorded.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said at its website that based on all available data, a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.
