SYDNEY, Jan. 24 (People's Daily Online) -- Cutting-edge breakdancers, traditional drummers, swirling lions and non-stop Asian pop kicked off Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival in spectacular style at the Chinese New Year Markets on Jan. 24, 2014.

Continuing throughout the weekend, Sydney’s Belmore Park are transformed into a bustling marketplace, exploding with the sights, sounds and tastes of Asia as part of the City of Sydney’s program of events to welcome the Year of the Horse.

Mayor Clover Moore said she was thrilled to see this year’s line up of colourful stalls, workshops and entertainment.

“People born in the Year of the Horse are characterised by their grandiosity and magnificence – that fits the City’s Chinese New Year celebrations which promise a spectacular experience for all the family,” she said. “Come and see a flurry of colour and excitement with dozens of dazzling lion dancers, world-class performances and a colourful sky lit up by firecrackers – and don’t forget to stop and enjoy some of Sydney’s finest Asian cuisine.”

This is the 18th Chinese New Year celebration held by the city of Sydney. One of the most eye catching activities this year will be the forthcoming twilight parade on Feb 2.
