MOSCOW, Dec. 31 -- The year of 2013 demonstrated that Moscow and Washington are able to work together to solve international problems, Kremlin said Tuesday.

"Russia and the United States, acting in a spirit of partnership and mutual interests respect, are able to contribute to the sustainable global stability and solution of the very acute international problems," President Vladimir Putin said in a New Year address to his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, released by the Kremlin press service.

Putin reconfirmed Moscow's intention to continue constructive dialogue with Washington and jointly work for mutual trust building and understanding.

Meanwhile, he said Russia has been looking forward to intensifying bilateral cooperation with the U.S. in economy, science and technology, culture and other areas.

In September, Obama canceled a planned meeting with Putin on the sidelines of a Group of Twenty (G20) summit in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, following Russia's decision to grant asylum to U.S. intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at that time that Russia-U.S. ties required "continuation of dialogue at the top level."

The two leaders needed to discuss an "abundant" bilateral agenda, which included a series of international issues, such as the situation in Syria, Peskov added.
