EDINBURGH, Dec. 21 -- A Memorial service was held on Saturday evening in Lockerbie in southern Scotland to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the bombing tragedy which killed 270 people.

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill attended the service to remember the victims of the Pan Am flight 103, which was on its way from London to New York when it exploded above Lockerbie on the evening of Dec. 21, 1988.

Simultaneous remembrance services were also held on Saturday evening at Westminster Abbey in London and Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, U.S. -- where most of the victims were from. The services were broadcast live on Sky TV News.

Earlier, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond joined the Lockerbie community and families and friends of the victims to attend a remembrance service at Dryfesdale Cemetery near Lockerbie, which was followed by a 30-minute wreath-laying ceremony

British Prime Minister David Cameron described the bombing as "one of the worst aviation disasters in history and the deadliest act of terrorism" ever committed in the country.

"Though 25 years have passed, memories of the 243 passengers, 16 crew and 11 Lockerbie residents who lost their lives on that terrible night have not dimmed," Cameron said.

In January 2001, Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was found guilty of the Lockerbie bombing and given a life sentence. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008 and granted the decision of freedom under compassionate release rules on Aug. 20, 2009.

Megrahi died in Tripoli, Libya in May 2012.

The investigation into the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie remains live and the British., U.S. and Libyan governments pledged to bring all those responsible for act to justice, and to reveal the full facts of the case.
