PARIS, Dec. 7 -- French President Francois Hollande on Saturday said to pour more French troops in the Central African Republic (CAR) to stop sectarian clashes and prevent a humanitarian massacre.

"Tonight, there will be 1,600 soldiers and they will remain (in the country) as long as necessary. They will be deployed rapidly (in the sensitive areas)," the president said.

French contingent in the CAR, its former colony, had reached its full strength of 1,200 troops on Saturday and was deployed to the north and west of the country to secure main roads and towns outside the capital, military officials said.

At the closing ceremony of a two-day meeting on peace and security in Africa, Hollande stressed Paris-led military offensive to restore security in French former colony would be "short" and "efficient" to "disarm all the militias and armed groups that terrorize the people," and to "restore stability and allow free and pluralistic elections."

On Thursday, French head of stat announced an immediate action in CAR shortly after the United Nations authorized the use of force in the African country.

Sangaris operation was France's second intervention in Africa, a move that could help Hollande to gain some success on the diplomatic front after disastrous poll ratings showed him as the most unpopular president due to wane growth and high unemployment.
