SANTIAGO, Oct. 17 -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera Thursday hailed Chile's election to fill a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) seat as a non-permanent member.

"This is an act of recognition and confidence in our country that I want to sincerely thank," Pinera said at the presidential palace of La Moneda, in the capital Santiago. "We assume this charge with tremendous responsibility and great commitment," he said.

Chile garnered 186 votes Thursday, with none against and five abstentions, to become a non-permanent member of the UN most important decision-making body.

"The principles of non-intervention, peaceful settlement of disputes and equality of states under the law, will be fundamental to our country's task in this body," said Pinera.

He added that Chile calls "for the thorough reform of the United Nations Security Council to make it more representative, permitting the participation of all parties in a more unbiased and equitable way."

This is the third time Chile will be serving as a non-permanent member, occupying the only seat for Latin America and the Caribbean.
