KAMPALA, Oct. 17 -- The United States has warned Uganda of an imminent terror attack similar to which occurred in neighboring Kenya where terrorists launched attack at the Westgate shopping mall in the capital Nairobi.

The U.S. embassy here said in a statement posted on its website that a Westgate-style attack may soon occur in Kampala, noting that there is no information on timing or location of the attack.

"The embassy will continue to alert U.S. citizens to any credible, specific information about this and any other potential threats. We again take this opportunity to remind the community to exercise vigilance and to avoid public venues that attract large crowds," said the statement dated Oct. 15.

The embassy said it is sharing all information with the Ugandan authorities.

The warning comes amid increased security alertness in the country following similar police warnings that terrorists may attack.

Somali militant group Al-Shabaab, who claimed responsibility for the Kenyan attack, have issued several warnings to Uganda that they will attack if the country does not withdraw its peacekeeping troops from Somalia.

Uganda was hit by the Al-Shabaab in July 2010 when suicide bombers killed over 80 people in a twin bomb blast in the capital Kampala.
