Cyprus has given its consent to a United Nations request to allow international experts assigned to the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons to set up a staging station in Cyprus, a government official said on Tuesday.
"We were requested by the United Nations to allow the team of chemical weapons experts to set up a staging station in Cyprus," the official who declined to give his name told Xinhua.
Cypriot officials were happy to comply with the United Nations request as the destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons will avoid a military operation which could draw the island into the conflict against its will.
The destruction of Syria's chemical weapons arsenal may last up to nine months and will end with the verification of the total elimination of Syria's chemical weapons program.
