YANGON, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 56 more remaining prisoners of conscience were released on Tuesday under a fresh amnesty order of President U Thein Sein, official sources said.
The move came as the government promised to release all political prisoners by the end of the year.
The release also came shortly after President U Thein Sein left for Brunei earlier on Tuesday to attend the 23rd summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Myanmar freed 73 prisoners including 68 prisoners of conscience in July.
Up to now, a total of 29,820 prisoners are estimated to have been pardoned since the new civilian government took office on March 30, 2011.
