Post-2015 agenda should continue to focus on development, poverty elimination: Chinese FM

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Friday that a new agenda of global development beyond 2015 should continue to focus on development and poverty elimination.

Wang made the statement when he was taking the floor at the annual general debate of the 68th UN General Assembly session, which opened here on Tuesday.

"The post-2015 development agenda should continue to focus on development and poverty elimination, give due consideration to national conditions and stages of development in different countries, and respect their independent choices of development paths," he said.

The post-2015 agenda should give priority to strengthening global development partnerships, upholding the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities, equity and respective capabilities, and improving follow-up mechanisms, he said.

The agenda should also focus on stepping up development financing, promoting trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and increasing official development aid and technical support to developing countries, Wang said.

"International development cooperation is at a crucial stage of building on past achievements to make new progress," he said.

China supports the continued and full implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the early launch of inter- governmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda. he said.

Agreed upon by world leaders at a UN summit in 2000, the MDGs set specific targets on poverty alleviation, education, gender equality, child and maternal health, environmental stability, HIV/ AIDS and malaria reduction, and a global partnership for development. The post-2015 development agenda is expected to build on the progress achieved by the MDGs.
