DAMASCUS, Sept. 17 -- At least five people were killed Tuesday in mortar attacks that targeted several parts of the Syrian capital of Damascus, the pro-government media reported.

The fresh attacks, staged by the rebels, targeted the residential districts of Amara, Qassa, and al-Abbasyeen, in southern Damascus, the official news agency SANA said.

Five people were killed and another 30 wounded when two mortars struck a marketplace at Bab al-Salam area in Qassa.

Another mortar landed at a church in the Qassa area, causing property loss, SANA said, adding that other mortars caused material damage in other southern districts of Damascus.

The fresh attack came amid heavy clashes between the government troops and the rebels in the southern countryside of Damascus.
