MEXICO CITY, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and another eight injured by a landslide that buried several homes and a bus in Mexico's Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, the National Civil Protection Council said Monday.
The landslide occurred around 8 a.m. local time (1300 GMT) Monday in the town of Xaltepec, in the municipality of Altotonga, following heavy downpours caused by Hurricane Ingrid, now a tropical storm.
Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte, who headed the Civil Protection Council meeting, said his government will provide aid to families of the victims.
With the help of Mexican army troops, Veracruz Civil Protection and Police units arrived at the site of the landslide to help recover the bodies of the victims and attend to the wounded.
Among the fatalities were two women and an infant, the remainder were adult men.
Ingrid is currently dissipating, though Mexico's National Meteorological Service has forecast more rain as a result of the thick clouds cover the hurricane system brought with it. Separate storms have been dumping rain on Mexico's east and west coasts.
