At least 76 children have been hospitalized after being given a wrong vaccine orally, instead of anti-polio drops, in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal Sunday, a senior health official said Monday.

"All the children are aged below five years. They were wrongly given hepatitis B vaccine orally instead of anti-polio drops in the state's Hooghly district. However, all the children are out of danger after they were rushed to a nearby hospital," he said, on condition of anonymity.

State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a high-level probe into the incident and suspended four health officials.

India, after being declared polio-free in 2001, conducts polio vaccination programs on some Sundays across the country.
