BRUSSELS, Aug. 26 -- A NATO official said on Monday that the military alliance was deeply concerned by the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria and the United Nations team should conduct on-site investigation.

"We are closely monitoring developments and are deeply concerned by the reported use of chemical weapons in Syria," the official told Xinhua via email.

"It's important that the UN team should have access to the area to investigate these horrific reports, as any confirmed use of chemical weapons would be completely unacceptable and a clear breach of international law," she said.

"NATO allies are closely monitoring developments in Syria and the wider region and will keep the situation under constant review, as appropriate. This is an issue that the entire international community has to address," she stressed.

The Syrian opposition claimed that 1,300 people were killed in a government chemical weapons attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus last Wednesday. The Syrian government denied the allegation.
