MANILA, Aug. 22 -- Death toll from the southwest monsoon rains reached 18 as three more deaths were announced Thursday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
All the victims died of drowning and four were still missing, the NDRRMC said.
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, at least 367,864 families with 1,754,076 persons from Ilocos region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and National Capital Region and Cordillera Administrative Region have been affected. Of the total number, 214,857 people were staying inside 718 evacuation centers. Some 741 areas in 92 municipalities in the affected regions were still flooded.
Economic losses arising from the monsoon rains in agriculture and infrastructure were estimated at 78.8 million pesos (about 1.8 million U.S. dollars).
