Clashes rage in eastern Syrian city: report

DAMASCUS, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Violent clashes erupted in Syria' s largest eastern city of Deir al-Zour amid ongoing conflicts between the army and rebels on several other fronts in the country, media report said.

The pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV said the clashes in the oil-rich city flared up in the past 24 hours, reporting losses on both sides.

The clashes come at a time when the Syrian troops are fighting intense battles in the coastal province of Latakia to recapture Alawite-dominated villages overran by the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front last week.

The rebels attacked villages in the countryside of Latakia to embarrass the administration of President Bashar al-Assad who belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The Western-backed rebellion is led by Sunni Muslims who are trying to topple the Alawite-dominated administration.
