UN Security Council slams deadly attack near Indian consulate in Afghanistan

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 5 --The UN Security Council on Monday condemned a deadly attack near the Indian consulate in an eastern Afghan city over the weekend, which killed 12 people and wounded 24 others.

The acts of violence against diplomatic and consular representatives endanger or take innocent lives and seriously impede the normal work of such representatives and officials, said a statement of the Security Council.

The members of the council expressed in the statement their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this "heinous act," and to the government and people of Afghanistan.

On Saturday, 12 people, including three attackers, were killed and 24 others wounded in shooting and ensuing suicide car bombing near the Indian mission in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, 120 km east of Kabul.

Most of the casualties were children as the blast took place near a mosque where dozens of children were attending religious classes. No Indian staff was hurt in the attack.

In the statement, the Council reiterated their serious concern at "the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida and illegal armed groups to the local population, national security forces, international military and international assistance efforts in Afghanistan."

The Council underlined the need to bring "perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism" to justice, and urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Afghan authorities in this regard, according to the statement.

"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group," it said.

Restating its support for Afghan sovereignty and Afghan national institutions of state, the Council reiterated that "no terrorist act can reverse the path towards Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability in Afghanistan, which is supported by the people and the Government of Afghanistan and the international community."
