UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Thursday announced the appointment of Speciosa Wandira- Kasibwe of Uganda as his Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Wandira-Kasibwe, who is currently serving as the Senior Adviser to the President of Uganda on Population and Health as well as the Chairperson of the board of Directors of the Microfinance Support Center Ltd, will be replacing Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania, according to an announcement released here by Ban's spokesperson.
Wandira-Kasibwe served as Vice-President of Uganda from 1993 to 2004, the first woman in Africa to hold such a position.
The experience Wandira-Kasibwe has gained within influential positions is pivotal to her new role as special envoy where she is tasked with advancing AIDS response and pro-active engagement.
In the last few years, the continent of Africa has witnessed a substantial amount of progress in halting the HIV epidemic.
"In 2011 there were 32 percent fewer AIDS-related deaths in Africa than in 2005 and also 33 percent fewer new infections in 2011 compared to 2001," the announcement said
"However, Africa remains the continent most affected by HIV. Of the 34 million people living with HIV worldwide, 23.5 million are in sub-Saharan Africa which constitutes 69 percent of all people living with HIV," it said.
