BAGHDAD, June 17 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton arrived in Baghdad on an unannounced visit on Monday to hold talks with Iraqi leaders, an Iraqi official television reported.
"Ashton accompanied by an EU delegation arrived in Baghdad airport earlier in the day and held meeting with deputy Prime Minister for energy affairs Hussein al-Shahristani," the state-run al-Iraqia channel said.
Later on, Ashton met with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, and the two officials discussed cooperation and coordination between Iraq and EU, the channel said.
Ashton is also expected to meet with other top Iraqi officials, including Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, according to local media reports.
On May 23, last year, Ashton visited Iraq during a round of talks about a nuclear dispute between Iran and the UN Security Council five permanent members (the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China) plus Germany, known as P5+1, in addition to EU.
