OTTAWA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Two men were killed in a shooting at a daycare in Gatineau, Canada's capital region, on Friday morning, while all 53 children were safely evacuated by the daycare staff members, police said.
Police were called to a home-based daycare, registered as Les Racines de vie Montessori, in a residential area around 10:30 a.m. because of reports of gunshots.
Gatineau Police Chief Mario Haren said in the afternoon that when police arrived, they found a gunman dead in one home, with his shotgun beside him; another man, a janitor at the daycare, was also found dead in another home.
Haren said the police are investigating the possibility that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the relations to the second man.
A total of 53 children, 48 older children in one home and five babies in the other, were moved to a neighbor's home and provided food while waiting for their parents.
Police appreciated the daycare staff members and their neighbor for the emergency responses.
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation cited police source as saying that the shooter was once in a relationship with the director of the daycare and the second man was the director's new partner.
