Nigerian soldier, 14 suspected militants killed in Kano raid

KANO, Nigeria, March 31 (Xinhua) -- One Nigerian soldier and 14 suspects of the Boko Haram sect were killed Sunday in the northwestern city Kano, according to the military.

Spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Captain Ikedichi Iweha, told Xinhua that one soldier died and another sustained injuries in a special operation conducted in Yan'Awaki area of Unguwa Uku quarters.

The JTF killed 14 suspects of the sect in the raid in which they met with stiff resistance in the troubled city.

The JTF also foiled a suicide bomb attempt when a Golf vehicle intercepted loaded with prime explosives devices (IEDS) at Yan' Awaki area of Unguwa uku and recovered cache of arms from the vehicle, he added.

He told Xinhua that the troops recovered 14 AK-47 during the battle with the terrorists. "We are working very hard and security will continue to ensure the peaceful state of Kano, assuring that security will not relent in their effort to protect people," he added.

The Sunday morning raid occurred barely two weeks after a motor park explosion killed 22 people and injured 65 others, according to police authorities in the northwestern state.

Waves of attacks believed to be perpetrated by the Boko Haram sect have been reported in the northern and central parts of Nigeria.
