LHASA, Dec. 13 -- Tibet's first national-level team for emergency control and prevention of infection was launched on Friday in the region's capital Lhasa, as part of efforts to enhance its emergency response capacity and to better safeguard Tibetan's lives and properties.` Phurbu Drolma, director of the health department in Tibet Autonomous Region, said it is among 12 such teams nationwide.

With an investment of 15 million yuan (2.5 million U.S.dollars) from the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the team has been in the planning since October, 2011.

It has 30 professional crew members and 10 maintenance staff, and is equipped with vehicles designed for emergency command, biosafety laboratory testing, water purification, oil and electricity security and personnel transportation.

The health sector in the region remains weak due to demographic and natural restrictions, according to Phurbu.

However, it is hoped that the team will improve the region's capacity in dealing with infections, natural disaster responses and guaranteeing security during events.
