Nestled in the tranquility of downtown Xi'an, the Great Mosque provides a great escape for visitors from the noises of the famous Drum Tower and the Muslim commercial area nearby. The religious venue, a large complex of huge old buildings, is one of the most famous Islamic mosques in China.
Originally built in the Tang Dynasty, it has a history of 1280 years and was designated as a national level heritage protection unit in 1988 for its historical and cultural significance. Covering an area of 13,000 square meters, it comprises four courtyards which stand in a line from the east to the west.
