Lead researcher, Wu Shulian, and the team of China's Universities Assessment, recently released the list of the best Chinese universities for different fields in 2013.
A total of 36 subjects in sciences for bachelor's degree have been established in universities across China.
The new subjects focus on 12 disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, atmospheric sciences, marine sciences, geophysics, geology, biosciences, psychology and statistics.
Bachelor's degrees in sciences conferred by universities in China accounted for 10.39 percent of bachelor's degrees. Master's degrees and doctoral degrees in sciences both accounted for 20.15 percent of their respective total numbers, according to statistics released by the Academic Degrees Committee Office of the State Council in 2010.
Statistics collected by universities across China show that among the 40,110 doctoral advisors at Chinese universities, 7,340 are advising Ph.D candidates in science subjects, accounting for 18.30 percent of doctoral advisors.
A total of 639 universities have set up science majors.
The quantity and quality of original achievements in basic sciences represent the scientific research level of a nation.
